Our Last Quarterly Meeting
Feature image jun19Our progam for the June 6th meeting as a special presentation to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. Our speaker was Rear Admiral Ron Henderson, USN (Ret). Admiral Henderson is an experienced naval aviator, former A7E and FA18 flight instructor, and commanded the carrier, USS John F. Kennedy. As the commanding officer of a carrier-based (USS Nimitz) strike fighter squadron, he led 12 FA-18 aircraft, 20 squadron pilots and 200 support personnel into combat operations over Iraq. He lives in Leland, North Carolina with his wife Kathy. Ron is on the Board of Directors for Friends of the Battleship North Carolina and the OLLI UNCW advisory council. He is a 2017 graduate of the OLLI UNCW Adult Scholars Leadership Program. His presentation gave us new and unique insight into the air, ground, airborne and naval aspects of the invasion. It was a tough assignment to summarize D-Day in Normandy in a half-hour, but Admiral Henderson's presenation made it easy to understand and see the "Big Picture" of the Normandy operations. Our thanks to him! Use this link to see more images from the meeting.
